Katia’s Family – Experiencing Immediate Benefits of Homeownership
Before Katia’s family moved into their Habitat OC home that Habitat OC volunteers had built, they rented, moved often, and never felt fully settled. There was always the fear that they’d have to pack up again. Her son would later recall at Habitat’s Building Dreams Breakfast that before their home, he hadn’t even bothered to remember his address because it was always changing.
That all changed when they became homeowners in January 2021. Within weeks, Katia noticed a shift in not just their living situation but in her children.
“In just a month, I saw the difference in their behavior,” she says. “They felt safe. They had privacy. They had a place that was theirs.”
Her husband described a sense of relief they had never known before. The stress of not knowing where they’d live next was gone. And her son finally bothered to remember their address. They finally had stability through the house volunteers had built for them to call home.
Reidwon’s Family – A Renovated Home Brings New Opportunities
For years, Reidwon and his family of eight squeezed into a two-bedroom apartment in Garden Grove. One bathroom, eight people. Mornings were hectic, and space was limited.
“We never had room,” he recalls. “It felt like we were always waiting—for our turn, for space, for something better.”
That chance finally came when they were matched with a Habitat OC buyback home—a home that was previously owned by another Habitat family, then restored for the next family in need. Volunteers gave their time to clean, repair, and prepare the home, ensuring it was move-in ready.
Now, life looks different.
“The kids love the backyard,” says his son Bilal. “We can take walks at night, something we never did before. And the school is great.”
Manny’s Family – Decades of Stability Through Volunteer Efforts
Manny and his wife were raising four kids in an apartment in Dana Point. He worked in food services and earned a steady income, but making only $30,000 a year, owning a home in Orange County was out of reach. Then Habitat OC offered him a path forward.
In 1999, volunteers came together to build a new Habitat home in Irvine for Manny’s family. That house became the foundation for his children’s future.
“We wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for Habitat,” he says.
Now, more than twenty years later, his children have grown up in a safe neighborhood, gone to strong schools, and built futures of their own. Because volunteers built the walls, Manny’s family were given the foundation of stability for generations to come.
